Author Rebecca Lim (Tiger Daughter, Two Sparrowhawks in a Lonely Sky) knows firsthand how impactful diverse representation can be for young readers.

Speaking to PETAA on a recent member-exclusive webinar filmed ahead of the Lunar New Year, she shared that, as a migrant child, she found most library books "didn't reflect our lived experiences." She recalls seeking refuge in "inappropriate adult sci-fi fantasy novels" for their more "international and accepting" perspectives.

This lack of reflection and representation stayed with Rebecca as she became a writer. "I wanted to understand what it means to be Australian - can you be Australian if you look a certain way?" Her new picture book, Our Family Dragon, answers this question with an emphatic yes — it celebrates Lunar New Year traditions in a decidedly Australian context.

"I wanted an Australian version of this story," Rebecca explains. She worked closely with illustrator Cai Tse, who is also an active practitioner of lion and dragon dance, to bring vibrant and detailed life to the family and surroundings depicted in the story.

Rebecca hopes books like hers can have a profound impact. "It's a lightbulb moment when kids realise not every person has the same background."

This is where teachers can help to build a more inclusive world. Rebecca hopes books like hers can be used in the classroom to open conversations about different cultural events and traditions. Educators are encouraged to help students explore multiple viewpoints rather than always centering their own experiences. (Learn more —  Hot Topics in literacy: Diversity in children's literature).

She also encourages teachers to use literature as a tool for opening students' minds. "Understand where ideas come from to navigate the world," Rebecca advises.

For aspiring young writers, her message is empowering. "Never doubt yourself. Keep practicing and showing your work," she urges.
