This course, created by Christine Topfer, provides practical classroom strategies and tools to set students up for success in spelling. The course supports teachers to plan and teach effective spelling strategies through recognising visual patterns, the meaning of word bases and the origin of words. This course will support teachers to plan and teach the following effective spelling strategies:

  • Recognising visual patterns (visual and orthographic knowledge)
  • Understanding the meaning of word bases, prefixes and suffixes (morphemic knowledge)
  • Making use of knowledge about the history of words (etymologic knowledge)
  • Transferring knowledge about likely spelling patterns 

Learning outcomes: 

  • Create a classroom culture that supports word study
  • Learn about how words work and what students need to know
  • Use assessment strategies for spelling
  • Apply strategies to support learning about words
  • Orchestrate spelling instruction in the classroom

How does it work?

  • Individuals: upon registration individuals will be sent a link to access the PL on our online learning platform.
  • Group Booking: Schools interested in making a group booking should email us the number of teachers they wish to enrol in order to receive a quote.
  • PL Subscription: Access this course via the PL Subscription homepage. All PL subscription members receive free access to all online unmoderated courses.

This course is self-paced and unmoderated. All participants have access to materials for 365 days from the date they register.
