What is the course about?

This practical course will focus on the use of authentic texts to teach phonics in the early years of school. It will demonstrate strategies for planning engaging, culturally responsive teaching and learning sequences that support each student’s development of phonics skills and vocabulary knowledge in a meaningful context.

Attendees will be using a range of approaches to teaching phonics in your classrooms and schools, with many using a synthetic phonics program with decodable texts. This course focuses on strategies you can use in conjunction with your existing phonics program. It provides criteria for selecting authentic texts and a range of strategies that support the explicit teaching of phonics in the context of understanding and creating meaning.

Examples of whole class and small group interactive experiences that enable students to explore and respond to texts, strengthen understandings of letter-sound relationships, and use language for a range of purposes will also be included.

Whilst the focus is on students in the early years of school, it is also relevant for students in Early Childhood, students with English as an additional Language and students with special needs.
