Online: Supporting EAL/D students in our classrooms 1

Supporting EAL/D students in our classrooms is a three part course designed to address the contributions and educational needs of diverse EAL/D students in Australian schools, including those who have recently arrived and who may be from refugee backgrounds. Drawing upon principles and practices of EAL/D pedagogy to support mainstream and EAL/D teachers in planning and implementing programs that meet the needs of EAL/D students in mainstream classes, teachers will learn how to identify specific teaching and learning practices that can best support the educational development of their EAL/D students.

Participation in these courses can be ‘one off’ or undertaken as a series of three separate sessions. We recommend all three be done in sequence.
This first module addresses program planning processes that are principled and collaborative; and that identify clear purposes for learning. It is organised in two sections:
- Section 1 — Program Planning
- Section 2 — Purposes for Learning

- Teachers of students in years F–6
- Teachers of EAL/D students, including new arrivals

Each module contributes four hours of online Professional Learning addressing 1.2.2, 1.3.2, 2.1.2, 3.1.2, 3.2.2, 3.5.2, 3.6.2 and 3.7.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
