Tax time support for teachers and literacy educators

Understand what professional expenses may be claimable and explore PETAA membership, publications, professional learning and conference access before 30 June.

EOFY is a useful time to review the professional expenses that support your work as a teacher or education professional. The ATO provides specific guidance about work-related deductions for teachers, including professional association fees, technical and professional publications, self-education, conferences, seminars and training courses.

PETAA does not provide tax advice, but this page can help you connect the ATO guidance with PETAA membership, books, courses and conference opportunities.

What teachers may be able to claim

The ATO states that to claim a deduction for a work-related expense, you must have paid for it yourself and not been reimbursed, it must directly relate to earning your income, and you must have a record to prove it.

  • Professional association fees
Relevant if you are joining or renewing PETAA membership for your work as a teacher or education professional.
  • Technical or professional publications
Relevant if you are purchasing professional texts that directly support your teaching work.
  • Self-education and study expenses
Relevant if professional learning maintains or improves the skills and knowledge needed for your current duties.
  • Conferences, seminars and training courses
Relevant where the learning directly relates to your current employment as a teacher or education professional.

This information is general only. Only the work-related portion of an expense can be claimed. Expenses cannot be claimed if they were reimbursed by your employer. Check the ATO guidance or speak with a registered tax professional about your circumstances.
