Free download: A guide to rich texts for supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures in the English and literacies classroom

With an ever-increasing array of children’s literature that infuses Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives it is easy to become overwhelmed by choice. Selecting texts that support all students to respect and appreciate Australia’s Indigenous culture can be challenging for busy educators. The texts featured in this guide have been selected from the 2022 CBCA list of Notable and Shortlisted books.

These 10 texts provide opportunities to look back, exploring the mistreatment of Aboriginal people over time as well as stories of inspiring yet under-recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from the past. They also encourage the reader to look forward, with titles that promote reconciliation and celebrate Indigenous culture.

The texts are suitable for early childhood through to upper primary. See sample pages below, and enter your details to receive a copy of the list!
