This course, based on our best-selling book Transforming Practice: Transforming Lives through Diverse Children's Literature by Dr Helen Adam, is a critical journey for educators wanting to use more diverse literature in their primary classroom, but unsure of where or how to start. It draws on the doctoral studies of Dr Helen Adam and the work of many other scholars that can help educators find ways to extend and transform their practice. In doing so, educators can help achieve equitable outcomes for all children and help create citizens with a strong sense of identity, social justice and sense of place in our world.

Learning outcomes: 

•  Articulate why diverse books matter - particularly in modern day Australian classrooms.
•  Apply frameworks and/or selection criteria to the choice of diverse children's literature for use in your context.
• Use a checklist to identify characteristics of a book and to spark discussion points with students.
• Understand how diverse literature can be used across all 3 strands of the Australian Curriculum: English
• Employ culturally responsive teaching with and through children's literature.
• Transform teacher read-alouds into a critical dialogue with students about race and culture.

This course is self-paced and unmoderated. All participants have access to materials for 365 days from the date they register.

 Completing this course comprises 5 hours (NSW - Elective PL) of online professional learning addressing standards 1.2.1, 1.3.2, 1.4.2 and 2.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
