Joint Construction (Persuasive Texts)

Joanne Rossbridge

3 hours

Available all year

Online unmoderated course

This course is designed to provide teachers with an understanding of how and why we can support students in the joint construction of persuasive texts. Discussion of text choices will focus particularly on audience consideration and the combining of ideas. Oral language strategies will be shared to show how to shift from oral to more written like language at the point of planning for joint construction. Strategies such as monster cloze, think alouds and margin questions will be used in the context of working with model texts and supporting students during joint construction. Joint construction will be looked at during the planning, drafting and editing/reviewing phases in the process of writing.

Learning outcomes:

  • Utilise the teaching learning cycle to underpin your planning for moving from modelling to joint construction.
  • Examine text structure, text phases and language patterns to identify a focus for writing
  • Make language features explicit in both argument and response model persuasive texts
  • Use oral language strategies to support planning for joint construction
