Guided reading is an interventionist instructional practice designed to support the development of effective reading skills. It relies on differentiated and targeted teaching to meet the learning needs of students. Understanding the purpose and design of guided reading is essential for all Foundation – Year 6 teachers as they seek to support their students to grow as readers.

Learning outcomes:

  • Articulate the purpose of guided reading for student learning
  • Describe how to group students according to learning need
  • Be able to select texts that support the learning intention
  • Identify and record evidence of the intended learning outcome
  • Understand the role of the teacher and the role of the students during a guided reading session
  • Be confident to use anecdotal evidence from guided reading sessions to inform future learning and as an authentic assessment tool

What else do I need to know?

This course is self-paced and unmoderated. All participants have access to materials for 365 days from the date they register. 

How does it work?

  • Individuals: upon registration individuals will be sent a link to access the PL on our online learning platform.
  • Group Booking: Schools interested in making a group booking should email us the number of teachers they wish to enrol in order to receive a quote.
