This is an updated version of the popular PETAA course, Introduction to English grammar and vocabulary, presented by Dr Rod Campbell. This course supports teachers to understand the role of grammar and vocabulary in the broader English literacy context, as described in the new NSW K-6 English syllabus, Australian Curriculum vs.9 and the National Literacy Learning Progression version 3. Teaching students the knowledge and skills for writing English can be creative, engaging, and effective. This short, practical course models strategies and provides resources that can be used immediately in the classroom.
Learning outcomes:
- Develop knowledge and skills for encouraging students’ vocabulary development through explicit grammar teaching.
- Learn how to develop student and classroom use of the metalanguage of English.
- Develop several strategies for teaching the sentence grammars of English.
- Identify and use correct metacognitive language for the open-class parts of noun groups, adjectival phrases, and clauses in writing.
- Learn to adapt activities to engage students in developing and using richer and more extensive vocabulary for speaking and writing.

This is a perfect opportunity for colleagues to work together in a PL session, or independently as part of their professional development practice. This course is self-paced and unmoderated. All participants have access to materials for 365 days from the date they register.
