This course, based on content from the bestselling book A New Grammar Companion for Teachers 3rd Edition by Professor Beverly Derewianka, explores different clause types and sentence structure. The course covers common misunderstandings and strategies to improve student’s understanding of how to compose grammatically correct sentences, improving the clarity of their writing.

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify and distinguish between simple, compound, and complex sentence structures. Construct both simple and complex sentences to enhance clarity in writing.
  • Combine clauses effectively to improve the flow and coherence of writing.
  • Utilise punctuation, such as commas and semicolons, to clarify complex sentences.
  • Recognise and address common issues students may have when constructing a sentence.
  • Understand the difference between quoting and reporting, and choose between direct quotes or paraphrasing for clear communication.
  • Master punctuation rules to correctly punctuate quoted and reported speech.

About your course creator:

Beverly Derewianka is Emeritus Professor of linguistics at the University of Wollongong, Australia. She is a leading figure in educational linguistics and Sydney School genre pedagogy. Her major research contributions have been in the field of literacy education. Her research projects tracing students’ literacy development have had a direct and substantial impact on curriculum and syllabus development in Australia and internationally. She is the author of two bestselling PETAA books, Exploring how texts work (2nd Edition) and the much-loved A New Grammar Companion for Teachers (3rd Edition).
