This course focuses on strategies to supplement your existing systematic phonics program with authentic texts. It will explore the use of authentic texts to teach phonics in the early years of school. It will demonstrate strategies for planning engaging, culturally responsive teaching and learning sequences that support each student’s development of phonics skills and vocabulary knowledge in a meaningful context.
Examples of whole class and small group interactive experiences that enable students to explore and respond to texts, strengthen understandings of letter-sound relationships, and use language for a range of purposes will also be included.
Whilst the focus is on students in the early years of school, it is also relevant for students in Early Childhood, students with English as an additional Language and students with special needs.
