Video: Oral Language - Pollinators Need Plants and Plants Need Pollinators

In this video, a Foundation-Year 1 teacher is explaining symbiosis to students: how a pollinator, in this case a parrot helps create new plants, and how the plant provides food for the parrot.  The learning area is Science. This is early in the topic, so there is a lot of teacher talk, as she explains the process to students.

Key Takeaways

  1. Notice how the teacher powers up and powers down with her language: from ‘making more of themselves’ to ‘reproduce’.
  2. Notice how the teacher uses oral cloze, i.e. beginning a sentence and pausing to see if students can complete it, as a way of checking for their understanding so far.
  3. Notice how she broadcasts a student answer, repeating it and elaborating on it to build common understanding in the class.
