Teaching writing for purpose

Online unmoderated course

As noted by AERO (2023), there are 3 key pedagogical approaches to the teaching of writing; one of these is genre writing, or writing for purpose. Teaching students to write for purpose aligns with the teaching and learning cycle, involves a high volume of teacher and student talk about language throughout the cycle, and ensures students are explicitly taught about purpose, context, structure and language features (including grammar) for each genre. It supports student agency and creativity, and lends itself beautifully to cross-curriculum teaching units.

This course will unpack genre theory, the practical writing components of a teaching and learning cycle (and how to execute these in the classroom), before diving into each text type in turn: imaginative; informative and persuasive, giving numerous examples for each of how to teach them using the teaching and learning cycle, scaffolding students to progress from field-building, to modelled writing, joint construction and finally, independent writing.

Learning outcomes:
  • Understand the role of writing for purpose in the broader English literacy context, as described in the Australian Curriculum v9, NSW Syllabus, VIC v2 and National Literacy Learning Progression
  • Explain genre theory and how it applies to text types identified in the curriculum (imaginative; informative; persuasive)
  • Teach writing for purpose in the context of a teaching and learning cycle
  • Understand the role of model texts and modelled writing in the teaching and learning process
  • Develop a strategic and explicit approach to the teaching of language features and text structures inherent in each text genre
  • Create a learning sequence that scaffolds and supports students from modelled, to joint, all the way through to independent construction
