Making poetry a pleasure

Presented by Sally Murphy. This workshop addresses some of the difficulties educators have in making poetry accessible and fun  for both teachers and students, by providing positive actions they can take to transform and enliven their poetry teaching.

It includes strategies, poems and discussion lead by author, poet, and experienced teacher, Dr Sally Murphy. Sally will present theory explaining why poetry is important; drawing on theories and research. There will be a focus on ways to read/examine poetry and also on how to teach poetry writing skills. Teachers will write their own poems exploring various strategies that can be used with their students.

Participants will:

  • Acquire new strategies for sharing poetry in primary classrooms.
  • Become familiar with contemporary poetry resources
  • Link poetry to other literacy objectives, and cross-curricular objectives
