What is the course about?

This course, presented by Professor Alyson Simpson, supports teachers and leaders to identify and select quality literature to meet the needs of their students, given the critical role of literature in the NSW English syllabus.

You will investigate the outcome "Understanding and responding to literature" and come away with a theoretical framework that you can apply to future lesson programming and broader planning. This framework will be paired with practical strategies to increase student agency. Participants will leave the course with a wonderful list of quality children’s literature for future use.

The days will be broken into 3 sections:

  1. Introducing participants to dialogic reading principles
  2. Providing opportunities to read and review recent award-winning Australian literature and try out new pedagogic strategies
  3. Planning for teaching with literature in ways that are suited to your students.
