2023 F2F: Multilingual Storyboxes in Early Childhood classes
Multilingual Storyboxes in early childhood classrooms
Presented by: Kim Cootes and Dr Gill Pennington
Thursday 30 March 2023 (4pm-6:30pm AEDT) About the workshop:
Need an introduction to EAL/D pedagogy? Start here! Investigate the value of stories as vehicles for language and literacy development in EAL/D learners, especially when accompanied by opportunities to respond playfully to multingual texts (and how this relates to current curriculum outcomes).
Then, explore the 'multilingual storyboxes', which provide a platform for valuing and exploring the diversity of languages spoken in your school community - while allowing students to draw on their linguistic resources to develop oral language and literacy skills in English.
Why participate?
- You will have the opportunity to explore a range of narratives for monolingual students encouraging cross-cultural perspectives
- Learn strategies for multilingual storyboxes, which pair core texts written in English and in home language(s) with related toys, craft materials, costumes and other materials to support learning
Who should participate?
- Teachers of students Years F-6
- Teachers of EAL/D students
- Early childhood teachers
