Online: Supporting EAL/D students in our classrooms 3
Presented by Dr Jennifer Hammond and Maya Cranitch. Supporting EAL/D students in our classrooms is a three part course designed to address the contributions and educational needs of diverse EAL/D students in Australian schools, including those who have recently arrived and who may be from refugee backgrounds. Drawing upon principles and practices of EAL/D pedagogy to support mainstream and EAL/D teachers in planning and implementing programs that meet the needs of EAL/D students in mainstream classes, teachers will learn how to identify specific teaching and learning practices that can best support the educational development of their EAL/D students.
Participation in these courses can be one off or done as a series of three separate sessions. We recommend all three be done in sequence.
Module three addresses the value for students of opportunities to Talk to Learn and to engage in sustained and in-depth conversations about key curriculum concepts.
This course is self-paced and equivalent to approximately 4 hours PD. There are short assessments to be completed as part of the course.
Please note: this course is available from 18/10/2021 to 12/11/2021. Extensions for Online: Supporting EAL/D students in our classrooms 3 cannot be granted unless under exceptional circumstances at PETAA’s discretion.
Who should participate?
- Teachers of students in years P/F/K/R-6
- Teachers of EAL/D students, including new arrivals
Cost of participation:
Completing this course will provide 4 hours of online professional learning addressing standards 1.3.2 and 1.5.2.
For NSW teachers: Completing Supporting EAL/D students in our classrooms: Part 3 Building Substantive Communication to Support EAL/D students will contribute 4 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and assessment of NSW Curriculum/Early Years Learning Framework addressing standard descriptors 1.3.2, 1.5.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
