Online: Teaching of writing with mentor texts
Actively noticing the craft of writing: attentive teaching with mentor texts. Presented by Dr. Lorraine McDonald, this workshop will demonstrate how students can be guided to 'actively notice' how quality texts are constructed and how to follow these mentor texts to make relevant choices for their own writing purposes.
This course is self-paced.
Participants will apply explicit language/grammatical knowledge to closely observe how readers are engaged, how the texts are cohesive and how writers introduce the topic/orientation. With support, students can develop knowledge about how language/grammar works to construct meaning, how sentence fluency can be achieved, and how personal connections and critical comprehension may be accomplished. Excerpts from several recent CBCA award winning texts (both fiction and non-fiction) are our text examples, and participants are asked to bring their own quality texts to apply the demonstrated knowledge.

Completing this workshop will contribute 5 hours of online professional development addressing 2.1.2, 2.2.2, 3.2.2,.3.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation.
Accreditation for NSW teachers: Completing Attentive teaching of writing with mentor texts before 4 February 2022 under NESA’s interim arrangements will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and assessment of NSW curriculum addressing standards 2.1.2, 2.2.2, 3.2.2, 3.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
