Online: Teaching visual literacy with multimodal texts

To be literate means something quite different to what it did a few decades ago. To be literate means gaining meaning from various texts, interpreting, analysing, judging, responding to and creating texts in different forms. These different text forms, in today’s society, are extremely visual in nature and often consist of multiple modes. Texts that use multiple modes or multimodal texts convey their meaning through written text, illustrations, symbols, sound tracks, moving images, photographs, captions, sound effects, different fonts and the spoken word.

This online course presented by Jennifer Asha is designed to provide you with a glimpse of the Australian Curriculum: English related to multimodal texts, to hear some ideas for how to think and talk about multimodal texts, and take part in some suggested literacy teaching and learning activities using multimodal texts. The course consists of separate self-paced modules and activities designed to adapt what you have learned to your classroom context.
