Face to face workshop - Sydney, NSW

A broad, rich and constantly growing vocabulary is a powerful component of students’ literacy and learning success. The correlation between vocabulary knowledge and literacy success is well-established, with vocabulary responsible for up to 80% of comprehension. Successful instruction is that which has as its primary goal the understanding of new concepts, not just new words (Nagy 1988), and is context and meaning-based within the fundamental purpose of language — communication.

  • Understand the role of vocabulary in the broader English literacy context.
  • Understand the value of explicit teaching of vocabulary to all students.
  • Know how to build vocabulary at grade and Stage appropriate levels.
  • Know ways to introduce and develop students’ technical vocabulary.
  • Use their knowledge to develop a strategic approach to the teaching of vocabulary.
  • Be able to adapt activities which will engage students in developing and using richer and more extensive vocabulary for speaking and writing.
