ONLINE: Putting the Literacy Jigsaw Together

People holding puzzle pieces and trying to fit them together

Bronwyn Parkin

5 Hours

8th May - 5th June 2023

Online moderated course

Teachers are presented with many different models representing the reading process and, more generally, models of literacy learning. Some examples are the ‘Big Six’, the Simple Model of Reading, the Scarborough Rope Model, the Three Cueing Systems, and Freebody and Luke’s 4 Resources Model. Each provides different pieces and shapes of the jigsaw that is the reading process. Time will also be given to exploring how a literature-based literacy program, with due time given to working systematically on both decoding skills and comprehension, can help students to make sense of the jigsaw pieces so that they can see the big picture.

Why participate?

  • Understand links between models of reading - how they assist reading, and their limitations.
  • Learn to understand where reading fits inside a model of language.
  • Learn strategies that enable a reader to decode.
  • Learn how to effectively support students to make deep inferential meanings from the texts they read.

Who should participate?

  • Teachers - Years F-4
  • Early-career and Pre-Service Teachers
  • Proficient Teachers who are interested in planning from whole texts
