Live Webinar: Meaning making in the age of fake news
Now in recorded sessions (for members only). Fake news, misinformation, bias, trolls, conspiracies, clickbait…welcome to the age of a relentless, brutal, and manipulative 24-7 news and information cycle. How do we negotiate the mire of agendas, opinions, and propaganda that can be created by anyone from your next-door neighbour to a state-sponsored organisation? The questions are endless. The answers can confuse. In this presentation by journalist, television producer and author, James Knight, we will learn about how we can best equip ourselves and our students to negotiate the precarious path of meaning-making at a time when it pays not to believe anything we see, read, or hear online. This presentation will examine the history of media lies. It will then progress to the traps of today’s world where every single one of us can be an influential public broadcaster at a time when too many online protagonists manipulate information for personal, professional, or political gain. The presentation will finish with some common sense tips that are underpinned by one central theme: ‘Be careful, this is the news.’
