Exploring how texts work in science

Luminescent globe of earth held in a hand
Presented by Bronwyn Custance and Tony Hole, for teachers of students in years 5-8. Learn how to  support your in reading and writing science texts to successfully construct and represent their learning.

This workshop connects the Australian Curriculum: Science specifically with the Australian Curriculum: English in order to explore core texts in Science: their specific structures and language features. It explores how teachers can use model texts within a teaching and learning cycle to build deep content knowledge and control of important language within texts.

This is a two-day workshop, with three weeks in between each session. Teachers are supported to plan language-focused literacy strategies using a core-text for a science topic they are currently teaching. They will try out a strategy and regather for reflection and more learning on the second day. On this second day they will be supported to place language-focused teaching using a teaching and learning cycle on a science topic of their choosing.
